In early 2025, Nicholls and Uttinger Civil were engaged to install a stormwater pipeline upgrade under State Highway 2, between Tauranga and Katikati.n
Works included installing a new 1800mm diameter culvert and a new 600mm diameter culvert underneath State Highway, plus associated wingwalls, scour protection and ground improvements.
The culvert lines were up to 8m deep in sections underneath the highway. We used 6 inch dewatering pumps, trench shields and sheet piles to carry out the ground improvement and culvert installation works.
The old culverts that we replaced below state highway 2 were then pumped full with low strength concrete, with approximately 150m3 of low strength concrete being pumped into the old culverts to ensure no voids below the road.
This major stormwater pipeline upgrade was constructed across one of the busiest roading corridors in the Bay of Plenty.
